The late Antony (Tony) Smith, one of the founding figures of Plantagenet Wines in 1968, has been posthumously awarded the Order of Australia in the King’s Birthday Honours. The award recognises his outstanding service to oenology and his lifelong commitment to the development of the Western Australian wine industry.

Tony Smith was a fierce and tireless advocate for Western Australian wine during its formative years. His leadership and vision helped shape the foundations of a thriving regional industry, and his influence continues to be felt today.
He played a central role in building industry structures, strengthening collaboration, and championing the reputation of WA wine both nationally and internationally.

Throughout his career, Tony held numerous influential positions, including:
- Co-founder and President, WA Grape Growers and Wine Producers Association
- Co-founder, Wine Show of WA
- Vice Chair, Small Winemakers Forum
- Co-founder and member, Australian Geographical Indications Committee
- President, Wines of WA
- Co-founder, Wine Producers Association
His leadership across these organisations helped establish standards, identity, and advocacy pathways for winemakers and grape growers across the state.
Service to Community
Beyond the wine industry, Tony dedicated significant time and energy to community service. He was an active contributor to organisations including Rotary, Apex, the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Mount Barker Community College, and Mount Barker Hospital.
He also created the Tony Smith Rotary Young Winemaker Scholarship, supporting the next generation of wine industry professionals.
